Umalusi announced new procedure for Matric Certificate Replacement

Umalusi, the South African Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, has announced a new procedure for replacing Matric Certificates. Learn about the steps involved and the requirements for obtaining a replacement certificate.

The quality council for general and further education and training, has officially launched the newly implemented online application system for the replacement of lost or damaged certificates.

Step 1: Register an account

You have to create an account via the Umalusi website.

Your account will be used to track and manage your replacement request.

Step 2: Create a request & submit documents

  • Once you’ve created an account, the next step would be to apply and create a request.
  • Select the qualification you are applying for replacement: National Certificate Vocational, National Certificate (N3), National Senior Certificate, Senior Certificate, General and Further Education Certificate, Amended Senior Certificate, ABET Level 4.
  • Submit an affidavit – All online applications must include signed affidavit from a police station stating the status of the original certificate e.g., stolen; lost in a move.
  • Upload certified copy of your identity document. (This copy must be certified by a commissioner of oaths).
  • Choose delivery method choose collection from the Umalusi Pretoria Office or receive the certificate via courier service.

Step 3: Collection of the certificate

Collect your replacement certificate or receive certificate via courier service (Courier delivery method is available at an additional fee)

Costs for Replacement

At the cost of R137, a candidate can collect a replacement certificate from Umalusi within two working days of submitting their application.

Alternatively, candidates can pay R202, which includes the initial R137 for the certificate and a further R65 for courier fees, to have the certificate sent within seven working days to their chosen physical address, anywhere in South Africa.

It is important to note that a certificate cannot be issued on the same day that the application is submitted. The processing time is 1 – 6 weeks under normal circumstances.

NOTE: Applications for lost or replacement certificates must be done directly with Umalusi online

To apply for a replacement of your Matric/Gr12 certificate, the following is required:

A completed application form, which can be obtained at any of the Departments of Education.

According to the council, candidates can now access the system from anywhere via a cellphone or PC to apply directly to Umalusi to replace their lost or damaged certificates.
