Reasons the Government Has Not Increased The R350 Grant

Wondering why the R350 grant hasn’t been increased? This article explores the reasons behind the government’s decision and what it means for those in need.

Recipients of the grant can use the grant to buy essential goods and services every month. Every month, SRD beneficiaries receive 350 grant. Since the introduction of the grant in 2020, the beneficiaries have received the same amount of money.

Since the grant was introduced in 2020, the Department of Social Development (DSD) is concerned that its value hasn’t increased. Inflation has decreased the buying power of R350.

  • The value of the grant has remained unchanged and does not keep pace with inflation, which directly means that the value of the SRD grant decreases every year as inflation increases.

Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu said the government attempt to increase the value of the SRD grant was unsuccessful. They explained that this was due to fiscal constraints.
